- How extensive reading helps?
As part of my teaching approach, I recently introduced an extensive reading activity in my EFL classroom, giving students the freedom to choose and bring their own books. The goal was to encourage reading for enjoyment rather than just focusing on comprehension exercises or academic tasks. At first, some students found it chalenging to pick books since they were used to reading materials assigned by the teacher. However, once they slcted books that matched their interests and language proficiency, their engagement and motivation grew significantly.
Throughout this experience, I noticed remarkable improvements in various language skills. Students became more fluent readers, picked up new vocabulary naturaly through context, and showed better comprehension. The activity also sparked peer interactions, as students eagerly discussed their books, shared recommendations, and even debated characters and themes. This not only enhanced their communication skills but also fostered a sense of independence in their learning.

This experience reaffirmed the importance of extensive reading in language learning. Allowing students to choose their own reading materials not only strengthens their language skills but also cultivates a more positive attitude toward learning. By incorporating extensive reading into the curriculum, teachers can create a richer, more engaging learning environment that supports long-term language development.
