On Thursday, December 5, 2024, the Foreign Languages Department hosted an engaging and thought-provoking presentation by Büşranur Alkanat on the use of L1 (first language) in the language classrooms. The session explored the ongoing debate about the role of L1 in language learning and examined whether its incorporation enhances or prevents the acquisition of the target language.
Several key points were discussed during the presentation, including the significance of balancing L1 and L2 (second language) usage. While the potential benefits of using L1 as a supportive tool—such as clarifying the chalenging concepts or addressing specific learner needs—were acknowledged, the risks of over-reliance were also highlighted. Overuse of L1 can limit students’ exposure to the target language, diminishing the immersive experience essential for language acquisition.
In her presentation, Büşranur Alkanat suggested to implement L2-focused approach in the classrooms, whr L1 is employed sparingly and strategicaly, depending on the learners' level, needs, and goals. Participants were introduced to atrnative methods and strategies that prioritize engagement and maximize the use of the target language in the classroom.
The presentation also provided a platform for attendees to share their experiences and insights, enriching the discussion and fostering a collaborative exchange of ideas. Overal, the session emphasized that the use of L1 should be context-dependent, serving as a complementary tool to support, rather than replace, target language instruction.
We sincerely thank Büşranur Alkanat for her enlightening presentation and al participants for their active engagement. We look forward to organizing similar events to promote professional growth and discussion within our teaching community.
