A GUIDE TO TEACH GRAMMAR STEP BY STEP THROUGH STORY TELLING

Teaching grammar through storytelling is a highly engaging and effective method being used especialy for young learners and ESL students. It helps students internalize grammatical rules in a natural context. Here’s a step-by-step guide with examples:

Step 1: Choose or Create a Story

Purpose: Select a story that naturaly incorporates the grammar topic you want to teach.

Example Grammar Focus: Past Tense Verbs
Story Example: "Yesterday, Lucy walked to the market. She saw a puppy on the way. The puppy barked happily and followed her."

Step 2: Read or Tell the Story Aloud

Purpose: Allow students to enjoy the story and absorb the language.

Tips: Use expressive reading or visuals. Don’t interrupt the story for explanations during the first read.

Step 3: Highlight Target Grammar

Purpose: Draw attention to the grammar in context.

Activity: Ask students to underline or point out al past tense verbs in the story.Write them on the board: walked, saw, barked, followed.

Step 4: Grammar Explanation in Context

Purpose: Teach the grammar rule using examples from the story.

Example: Explain that:

  • Regular past tense verbs often end in -ed (walked, followed).
  • Some verbs are irregular (saw, barked).

Tip: Keep it short and intuitive, reinforcing that grammar exists to help the story make sense.

Step 5: Guided Practice

Purpose: Help students apply the grammar rule.

ActivitiesFill-in-the-blank using story sentences: Yesterday, Lucy ___ (walk) to the market.

  • Match present to past verbs from the story.

Step 6: Create New Stories

Purpose: Let students use the grammar in original contexts.

Activity: Ask students to write a short story using 5 past tense verbs. Or, retell the original story from another character’s point of view

Step 7: Reinforce with Games or Visuals

Purpose: Solidify understanding in a fun way.

Examples:

  • Verb Sorting Game: Students sort regular vs. irregular verbs.
  • Story Scramble: Mix up story sentences, have students put them in order and correct the grammar.

Step 8: Review and Reflect

Purpose: Assess understanding and reinforce learning.

Activity: Have a discussion: “What did you notice about the verbs in our story?” Use quick quizzes, peer feedback on their stories, or exit tickets with a grammar question.
