Active Listening

These days, unfortunately we do not know how to listen to each other. The most important way to understand and respond is to listen. So active listening is realy crucial step to learn English.

Active listening means giving your full attention to the speaker, both verbaly and nonverbaly, to understand their message and perspective, rather than simply waiting for your turn to speak. It involves focusing on the content of the message, the speaker's emotions, and their body language, to grasp the full meaning behind their words.

What are the methods to consider?

  1. Be Fully Present

Active listening requires being fully present in the conversation so you should concentrate on what is being said. Of course, to be able to do so you should put away your cell phone, ignore distractions, avoid daydreaming, and shut down your internal dialogue.

  1. Keep Good Eye Contact

Making eye contact is especialy important. This tells the other person that you are present and listening to what they say. It also shows that you aren't distracted by anything else around you.

  1. Ask Open-Ended Questions

Asking "yes or no" questions often produce dead-end answers. Instead, ask open-ended questions to show that you are interested in the conversation and the other person.
