GUIDELINES FOR BETTER ACADEMIC WRITING

GUIDELINES FOR BETTER ACADEMIC WRITING

There are certain steps you can apply to your writings in order to improve your productive writing skill.

Step 1: Start at the Sentence Level
English syntax is much stricter than Turkish. In Turkish, word order is flexible thanks to noun cases. For example, these variations al mean the same:

Turkcell’le bağlan hayata./Turkcell’le hayata bağlan./Hayata Turkcell’le bağlan./Hayata bağlan Turkcell’le./Bağlan Turkcell’le hayata./Bağlan hayata Turkcell’le.”

But in English, there's usualy just one clear option:

Connect to life with Turkcell.”

Because English lacks noun cases, word order matters more. So, get familiar with sentence patterns like:

  • Reading is enjoyable. (Gerund as subject)
  • I enjoy reading. (Gerund as object)
  • While she was cooking, someone knocked.
  • All tenses, conditionals, active-passive, and clause structures.

Without a solid grasp of sentence structures, grammar and meaning can suffer.

Step 2: Move on to Paragraphs
Once your sentences are strong, focus on writing well-structured paragraphs.

Step 3: Write Essays
Finaly, start writing full essays. Study good examples and use them as models.

You need to be very familiar with these and similar structural patterns and sentence types in English; otherwise your grammar would not be good and this would cause problems in meaning and in your writing.
